SPARROWHAWK
FIRST FLIGHT
The SparrowHawk took to the air on itís first flight February 25th.
Jim Mayfield, the President of GBAís subsidiary American Autogyro
Inc. (AAI), and GBAís Chief Test Pilot and principal designer, said,
"The SparrowHawk, as was anticipated, handles very well in
flight. We are excited about offering the aviation community a gyroplane
with this level of engineering excellence coupled with unparalleled
safety. The centerline thrust design, incorporating a generous horizontal
stabilizer, ensures stability and increases safety. Iím also proud
to announce delivery of the initial components of SparrowHawk kits
to many of our AAI Dealers who have already begun manufacture and
assembly. The input of their experience will help ensure a satisfying
and pleasurable experience for our current and future customers
who build this aircraft." The SparrowHawk sports a large two-place
cabin with a width of 44 inches, more than 4 inches wider than a
Cessna 172, providing great visibility and comfort for the pilot
and passenger.

GYROLIFTER MONSOONTM
GBAís proposed GyroLifter concept, in addition to its uses as proposed
to DARPA for an Advanced Maneuver Transport, could also serve in
a wildfire suppression role. Using this aircraft in a "dual
use" role as an aerial fire fighting vehicle was first suggested
by William B. Scott, Rocky Mountain Bureau Chief for Aviation Week
& Space Technology magazine (AW&ST). Mr. Scott, in his article
in AW&ST, notes that the fast moving fires in Southern California
underscore the importance of a timely "initial attack"
to preclude heavy losses of life and property. Because of its high
speed response time and ability to fly low and slow safely, the
GBA GyroLifter fitted with a water cannon could fight fires day
or night as an initial attack aircraft. Its 3,000 gallon tank provides
ample water/retardant for accurately and quickly dousing spot-fires
before they become large uncontrolled burns. For more information
on GBAís GyroLifter concept, please click here on "Gyrolifter."

EXHIBITS AT COPPERSTATE
American Autogyro exhibited the SparrowHawk prototype at the Copperstate
Regional EAA Fly-in, held at the Phoenix, AZ Regional Airport. As
it did at PRA/Mentone and EAA/Oshkosh, the SparrowHawk prototypeís
combination of balance and fine lines attracted much attention and
contributed to additional sales which now total over 30 aircraft.
The SparrowHawk also caught the eye of the media. The February issue
of Custom Planes magazine featured an article on the event
and was very complimentary of the design and market potential of
the SparrowHawk.
